Thank you for contacting me about BAME communities and the criminal justice system and the Lammy report.
There is now a wide range of work in place responding to the 35 specific recommendations made by David Lammy MP. This work will also take the agenda above and beyond these recommendations.
The Government’s response has sought to tackle directly the problems that Lammy’s report states that it has identified and his recommendations. As a key principle from the review, an “explain or change” approach has been adopted to identify and objectively assess disparities and then decide whether and how changes need to be applied.
It is also good news that the Government understands the importance of openness and accountability as this work continues. Ministers are committed to transparency in this area. The Secretary of State for Justice released a comprehensive report in February this year on tackling racial disparity in the Criminal Justice System.
You may be particularly interested in Annex 1 of the report which updates the progress on each recommendation of the Lammy Review. You can read this at the following link - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/tackling-racial-disparity-in….
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
