Thank you for contacting me about race and opportunity in the UK.
Unreasonable and irrational prejudice and discrimination have no place in a civilised society.
The UK has made huge strides in expanding opportunities for all; for example, we currently have the most ethnically diverse Government in the history of our country and there are now significantly higher numbers of students from black and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds attending university.
There is much more to do to create more opportunities for groups and individuals facing barriers that can and ought to be removed.
On ethnicity, the Prime Minister has announced that he is setting up a cross-governmental commission on racial inequality which will examine all aspects of disparity including health, employment, and education. There is also urgent work underway across Government in response to Public Health England’s review into disparities in outcomes among those worst affected by Covid-19. Improving the understanding of key drivers of disparities is essential in protecting high risk groups so I am encouraged that the Race Disparity Unit is at the centre of this work.
I will be working closely with my colleagues in Parliament to ensure this progresses quickly and action is taken forward.
Thank you again for contacting me.
