Over the last six months, residents of Elland and Todmorden will have been aware of the situation developing between Calderdale Clinical Commission Group (CCG), the organisation responsible for commissioning primary health care services, and the contracted GP surgery operators Locala and Meadow Dale Group Practice.
Both operator contracts were coming to an end at the end of April 2020. The preferred option for the CCG was to close both Practices and disperse the patients of the Elland (Meadow Dale) and Todmorden (Locala) practices among other GP surgeries in the respective areas, as opposed to finding an alternative provider to run the GP surgeries.
Whilst other Elland GP surgeries were able to accept patients and are within a short distance of the Meadow Dale Group Practice, this same decision would have been of great harm to those patients attending the Locala Todmorden practice who would not have been able to attend an alternative GP surgery within their community.
On behalf of affected patients, Craig and the Adults Scrutiny board on Calderdale Council lobbied the CCG to keep the Todmorden practice open, and we are pleased to announce that patients of the Locala practice will be able to continue to see their local GP at Todmorden Health Centre. The CCG will continue efforts to secure a long-term solution for Todmorden that maintains patient choice.
Speaking on the issue Craig said “I am thrilled that patients of the Locala practice in Todmorden shall continue to receive the right care at the right place. Thanks to the hard work of many people, these patients can continue to attend the same GP surgery in their own community without having to travel great distances ensuring that they feel content and safe, and that they are treated by a GP who knows them and their medical history well.”
