Northern Ireland: Marriage Law Changes

Thank you for contacting me about changes to the marriage laws in Northern Ireland.

Following the votes about same-sex marriage during the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation) Bill, careful consideration must be given to both the policy detail and also the implementation. A clear message was sent by the House, but we must ensure that we do not end up with defective laws, which would not serve the interests of the people of Northern Ireland.

I understand that the Government is actively considering how it can take this forward and ensure the amendments are workable. Restoring the Executive remains the Secretary of State’s key priority and it is very positive news that a new phase of talks began in May.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
