Thank you for taking the time to contact me about trade deals and changing the law so that MP’s become part of the decision- making process for new trade deals.
Can I first of all say that, having been a government whip for the whole period of the paralysis in Parliament over Brexit, I can’t think of anything worse than this proposal?! Negotiations on any topic would be in great danger of being endlessly drawn-out to the great harm of the country and its interests. There is a reason we have civil servants and negotiators!
Parliament does indeed have the final say on any trade agreement after it has been negotiated and, just to reassure you, we already have food standards embedded in our legislation which ban chlorinated chicken and hormone-injected beef from entering our supermarkets and, very important, protections for our NHS are also in legislation. Parliament already has a say on whether any of our food standards change as all such changes have to be brought to Parliament.
Thank you for taking the time to contact me.
