Celebrations are ongoing at The Veg Shop in Brighouse and Elland Market which have been voted ‘Best Shop’ and ‘Best Market’ respectively in Craig Whittaker MP’s Calder Valley Shop & Market of the Year Competition 2022.
The Competition has been hosted by Craig Whittaker MP, Calder Valley’s Member of Parliament. This is the first year that the competition has been held, and over 1500 people voted for their favourite local shop and favourite market.
Craig Whittaker said that the competition was a close result, with over 70 local shops nominated. The competition was well received, and he said he was delighted to see local businesses and markets thriving in Calder Valley which is a testament to business owners, traders and their staff.
As victors, The Veg Shop in Brighouse and Elland Market were presented with a trophy. Sutcliffe’s Butchers (Elland), Roots Whole Food Market (Elland), Brick Shack (Brighouse) and Ripponden Wine Company (Ripponden) were runners up for ‘Best Shop’, and Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Brighouse markets were close runners up for ‘Best Market’
Speaking on the event Craig said:
Calder Valley’s Shop & Market of the Year was a roaring success. I would like to congratulate the winners, The Veg Shop in Brighouse and Elland Market, runners-up and all those shops nominated. I would also like to thank the members of the public who voted for their favourite venues.
It is vital that we back our local shops. They support communities and employ local people. The competition promoted local businesses across the Calder Valley, but most of all, it was a bit of fun.
Whilst there had to be a winner, I would like to thank all the local establishments who got involved. They are clearly valued by all across the Calder Valley.
As a former retailer myself, I know how challenging running a local business can be. We should all be proud to have such a diverse local offering. The success of our local trade is a credit to those whom work within the industry or support the sector with their custom.
This year was incredibly competitive, and Calder Valley’s shop of the Year will return again next year!”
