Thank you for contacting me about industrial action on the railway network.
Like you, I am concerned by the potential for large scale industrial action on our railways over the summer. On June 21st, over 50,000 railway workers will walk out. This includes Network Rail, 13 train operating companies and London Underground. On June 23rd and 25th, up to 40,000 workers will walk out. This includes Network Rail and 13 train operating companies.
With the Government having stepped in and committed £16bn – equivalent to £600 for every household in the UK – to keep trains running through the pandemic, ensuring no Train Operating Company or Network Rail employee was furloughed so that key workers could keep moving, it is extremely disappointing that the unions are threatening industrial action right at the point at which the railways are beginning to recover.
I know the Government recognises the nature of current cost of living situation our nation faces and would like to unfreeze pay. But while taxpayers continue to foot the bill, ministerial colleagues cannot support union demands for huge government funded pay increases, especially when many railway staff are already being paid far more than teachers, nurses, and emergency workers.
It is disappointing that the unions are threatening industrial action before engaging in meaningful talks to try and find a resolution.
Minimum service agreements: I understand that ministerial colleagues continue to assess the case for legislation requiring minimum service levels on the railway network. This is an idea that needs to be taken seriously and I will continue to engage with colleagues on this matter.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
