Thank you for contacting me about a second referendum.
The British people have already had the final say on the UK’s EU membership and they voted in significant numbers to leave the bloc in 2016. I am determined to deliver on this result and I oppose a second referendum. Parliament has also rejected a second referendum on two previous occasions.
For too long, millions of people across the country have struggled to make their voices heard. A majority chose to leave the EU and I believe that another vote would be divisive for British society. Staying in the bloc would also betray the trust of voters in politicians. The value of democracy lies not just in the number of times citizens vote but also in it being clear that votes are respected and acted upon.
The Government has reached a new deal with the EU and it is now time to get Brexit done. Over 17.4 million people voted to leave the EU and politicians cannot choose which public votes they respect.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me
